2011 Forrest Noble Riesling

Forrest Marlborough Noble Riesling 2011

John Forrest is one of this country’s masters of botrytised sweet Riesling wines.  He has numerous top awards for this style of wine, with the expertise in fruit selection to maintain fruit integrity with the effects of noble rot, and the careful vinification to avoid any characters which may spoil the balance and flavour of the resultant wine.  Most of his sweet wines are bottled under the ‘John Forrest Collection’ label, but there are wines under the ‘Forrest’ estate brand, and these can be veritable bargains.  Here, I review the Forrest Noble Riesling 2011, which differs from the Forrest Botrytised Riesling 2011 which is 11.0% alc., 147 g/L RS, TA 7.8 g/L and pH 3.45.  This Noble Riesling has figures that suggest better ageworthiness.  www.forrest.co.nz

Forrest Marlborough Noble Riesling 2011  ★★★★★

Bright, deep golden colour, a little lighter on the rim.  The bouquet is elegantly presented with rich, deeply concentrated aromas of complex, savoury honeycomb, marmalade, ripe tropical fruits with notes of musk and secondary caramel and toastiness.  Very sweet to taste and light-medium bodied, the palate has a concentrated core of honey, marmalade, tropical fruits and musk, with layers of toast and cream custard indicative of full maturity.  The palate richness is balanced by fine, dry phenolic textures, with the acidity in the background lending energy and cut.  The opulent fruit begins to dry as the wine carries to an elegant, sustained finish of honey and toast.  This is a rich and complex, mature Noble Riesling with honey, marmalade, caramel and toasty flavours on a palate with fine, drying balance.  Serve with baked desserts and crème caramel over the next 2-3 years.  Fruit primarily from the estate ‘Brancott’ vineyard with some from the ‘Home’ blocks, picked with bunches possessing over 70% botrytis and cool-fermented in stainless-steel to 9.5% alc., 167 g/L RS, TA 8.1 g/L and pH 3.04.  120 cases available from the ‘Friends of Forrest Cub’ and cellar door.  (375 ml)  18.5/20  Nov 2017  RRP $28.00
