2020 Forrest Lagrein - 6 Bottles Special

2020 Forrest Lagrein - 6 Bottles Special

Something a little unusual from Marlborough. Originally from North-eastern Italy, this tiny parcel was sourced from the Stanley Estate plantings in the Awatere Valley. It shows dark fruit characters, a little Awatere spice and a fresh, lively acidity. It's a slightly more robust red than our usual Pinot Noir and a great match with a big steak over the open grill this winter.

⭐⭐⭐⭐½ | Michael Cooper
The characterful 2020 vintage was grown at Stanley Estate, in the Awatere Valley. Deeply coloured, it is a fresh, rich, fruit-packed red, with concentrated berry, plum and spice flavours, threaded with vibrant acidity, balanced oak and supple tannins. Youthful and vigorous, it should break into full stride 2024+.

Grown in the Awatere Valley, this north-eastern Italian grape variety offers a robust alternative to pinot noir. It’s a deeply-tinted red with plum, prune, savoury, earthy, dark chocolate and leather flavours. An appealing red.

Deep, dark purple with a ruby-red core, lighter on edge. This has a grounded, earthy tone, gently releasing aromas of blackberries, plums and savoury nuance. Full-bodied, blackberries and plums aromas intermixed with spice, earthy soil minerals and a hint of game. The fruit has richness and a savoury edge, entwined with powdery tannins, leaving a silky, structured mouthfeel. Juicy acidity lifts the rich flavours and tannins and carries to a long, elegant finish. This Marlborough Lagrein shows concentration, earthy minerals and a silky mouthfeel. Match with lamb koftas and braised veal over the next 5 years.

Bold and brooding, the wine shows dark berry, cured meat, cake spice and rich floral aromas, followed by a generously textured palate displaying lovely density and plump mouthfeel. Firm and sturdy with a lengthy supple finish. At its best: now to 2028.
